Absolute champion U23 Vietnam

On the evening of July 29, the U23 Vietnam team was crowned champion of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship after defeating host U23 Indonesia 1-0 in the final match at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. This is the third consecutive championship for U23 Vietnam.

In this match, coach Kim Sang Sik kept the same starting lineup that won against U23 Philippines in the semi-finals. It seems that the Korean strategist has found the most satisfactory framework.

And what U23 Vietnam showed in the match proved that.

Approach the match appropriately

Coach Kim Sang Sik must be commended for choosing a very reasonable approach for U23 Vietnam to the match. That is a proactive, patient defensive style with a 3-4-3 formation, ready to switch to 5-3-2 or 5-4-1.

The caution of U23 Vietnam made it difficult for the host Indonesia. Although they had more possession of the ball, Indonesia's attack was not sharp enough to penetrate the U23 Vietnam defense.

It must also be said that U23 Indonesia played too monotonously and without much strategy - something they have shown in previous matches. U23 Indonesia played too dependently on the individual efforts of Jens Raven, Rahmat Arjuna or Rayhan Hannan.

The deadlock of U23 Indonesia was also shown by the long balls to the side. But this direction of attack was blocked by U23 Vietnam defenders.

In this match, right-back Vo Anh Quan was instructed to limit his high-up play to focus on defense, preventing threats from the opponent's right flank.

Sweet fruit from corner kick

Playing solidly and tightly on their home field, U23 Vietnam looked forward to counterattacks. But when their opponents had yet to reveal any openings, U23 Vietnam found a goal from a corner kick.

In the 36th minute, Dinh Bac's corner kick created a chaotic situation in the penalty area. Cong Phuong seized the opportunity to score a one-touch shot that broke the net of U23 Indonesia.

This goal was a bit lucky but it can be seen that U23 Vietnam had a very intentional corner kick when they sent the ball to the second post for the player to head it back inside to create chaos and thereby score.

But the important thing is that at the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship, coach Kim Sang Sik's team scored quite a few goals from corner kicks and set pieces. That shows that Cong Phuong's goal against U23 Indonesia was not accidental.

After the goal, U23 Vietnam brought the match back to the desired level. Although the red team let their opponents control the ball more, they did not give U23 Indonesia many opportunities to approach the goal.

The U23 Vietnam players avoided moving much to fill gaps, fought strongly and often forced the opponent to return the ball back.

U23 Indonesia fell into a state of complete despair and could only cross the ball into the penalty area to hope for luck. But inside, U23 Vietnam had goalkeeper Trung Kien playing steadily and easily clearing high balls.

We should also praise the fighting spirit of U23 Vietnam in this match when they played with determination, concentration and were not afraid of collision despite being under great pressure from tens of thousands of home fans.

Convincingly defeating U23 Indonesia, U23 Vietnam was crowned champion of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship with an all-win record. Coach Kim Sang Sik's team can be considered the absolute champion of the tournament.

In particular, U23 Vietnam has won the U23 Southeast Asian Championship 3 times in a row, an unprecedented record in history.
