Since October 27, fighting between three rebel groups and the military has broken out in Shan state in northern Myanmar, according to AFP.

Three rebel groups, the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), the Arakan Army (AA) and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), claim to have seized several military posts and key roads linking Myanmar to China. The three groups have frequently clashed with the military over autonomy and control of resources.

The TNLA said today that it is fighting with the Myanmar army in an area about 40 km east of Lashio town. Lashio town is the northeastern headquarters of the Myanmar army.

Shops in the town of Lashio were open but banks were closed and the streets were quieter than usual, a resident told AFP. "Security forces have blocked roads around the military base and the airport," some residents said. A ticket agent said flights to and from the airport in Lashio had been cancelled until at least tomorrow.

In addition, on October 30, the MNDAA released footage showing its members occupying the town of Chinshwehaw, located in the border area with China. The MNDAA, TNLA, and AA confirmed that since October 27, dozens of military personnel have been injured, killed, and captured.

Earlier, spokesman Zaw Min Tun of the Myanmar military government said on October 27 that rebel groups attacked military positions in the Chinshwehaw, Laukkai and Kunlong areas and several outposts were captured.

As the fighting continued, Myanmar’s military junta’s Home Affairs Minister Yar Pyae met with Chinese Public Security Minister Wang Xiaohong in Naypyidaw on October 30, according to the Global New Light of Myanmar. During the meeting, the two sides “discussed peace and tranquility in the two countries’ border areas” as well as cooperation on law enforcement and security.
