(NADS) - Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as Sword Lake, is located in the city center. This is one of the historical relics and scenic spots that cannot be missed in the capital.
Previously, the lake had other names such as Luc Thuy Lake or Thuy Quan Lake. In the 15th century, the lake was renamed Hoan Kiem Lake, associated with the story of King Le Thai To returning the precious sword to the golden turtle. Legend has it that when King Le Thai To was fighting off the invading Ming army, he found a sword called Thuan Thien. That was the sword that the Dragon King lent to the king to fight the enemy.
After defeating the Ming invaders and ascending the throne in 1428, while walking on Ta Vong Lake, the Golden Turtle emerged and asked the king to return the magic sword to the Dragon King. The king returned the sword and the Golden Turtle slowly disappeared. From then on, the king decided to change the name to Hoan Kiem Lake or Sword Lake, the name we still use today.
Due to its prime location, connecting the old quarter such as Hang Ngang, Hang Dao, Cau Go, Luong Van Can... with the Western quarter such as Nha Tho, Trang Thi, Hang Bai, Trang Tien, Hang Khay..., Hoan Kiem Lake attracts many domestic and foreign tourists to visit and explore .
Hoan Kiem Lake is a gathering place, an ideal meeting place in all four seasons: Brilliant in peach blossoms and traditional festivals in spring; strong winds dispelling the sweltering heat of summer; intoxicated by the drooping willow branches in the magical mist of autumn; splendid in the rain of yellow leaves and the light drizzle of winter.
This is also a place associated with the spiritual history of the capital. Hoan Kiem Lake has two floating islands: Ngoc Island is located in the north of the lake, with The Huc Bridge curved across connecting to the island, with Ngoc Son Temple with unique architecture and a synthesis of Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist elements. In the middle of the lake is the smaller Turtle Island, above which is the ancient Turtle Tower, a hundred years old, standing silently amidst the shimmering waves all around.
On the weekend, the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake will become a walking street with many attractive activities such as street music , folk games, etc., attracting a lot of tourists.
Although located in the middle of the splendid, modern and bustling capital, Hoan Kiem Lake still retains its ancient and quiet beauty over time. That silence and antiquity create an invisible wall separating Hoan Kiem Lake from the bustling Hanoi in the distance. That uniqueness makes anyone who comes to Hanoi must visit Hoan Kiem Lake at least once.
