Not long after, US President-elect Donald Trump also confirmed that he had a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on January 17.

According to Reuters, Mr. Trump said he discussed with the Chinese leader about trade issues, fentanyl and the social network TikTok.

According to the president-elect, "this was a very good phone call for both China and the United States."

"I expect we will immediately begin working on many issues together. We discussed balanced trade, fentanyl, TikTok, and many other topics. President Xi and I will do everything we can to make the world a safer and more peaceful place," Trump wrote on social media.

According to China Central Television (CCTV), during the phone call, President Xi Jinping affirmed that both sides attach importance to interaction and expressed hope for a "good start" in US-China relations during the new term of the US president.

Earlier the same day, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that Vice President Han Zheng would represent President Xi Jinping at Trump's inauguration ceremony on January 20.

"We are willing to work with the new US administration to enhance dialogue and communication, properly manage differences, jointly promote win-win cooperation, jointly pursue a stable, healthy and sustainable China-US relationship, and seek the right path for the two countries to get along," the ministry stressed.

According to AFP, Mr. Trump has threatened to impose even harsher tariffs on China in his next term, raising concerns about a trade war that could impact the global economy .

On January 16, China criticized comments by US Secretary of State candidate Marco Rubio when he called Beijing Washington's "most dangerous rival".

Previously in December 2024, Mr. Xi Jinping affirmed that China is ready to engage in dialogue and expand cooperation with the US, emphasizing that the trade war will not benefit any side.
