The latest figures from the Labor Department's October jobs report provide the latest picture of the labor market and the final economic news before Election Day. In many surveys, the economy is the top issue for American voters.

According to experts, the gloomy feeling about the US economy under President Biden is also one of the important reasons why voters side with Republican candidate Donald Trump.

And when the Labor Department's pre-election report showed weak job growth, largely due to the effects of hurricanes and a major labor strike, Trump seized the opportunity. "This jobs report is a disaster, and it clearly proves that Kamala Harris and Joe Biden have taken our economy off the cliff," Trump said at a rally in Michigan ahead of the election.

According to the report The latest data from the Labor Department shows that the US economy added 12,000 new jobs in October. This is the lowest number of jobs increased since December 2020. The US unemployment rate in October remained unchanged at 4.1%. This data was collected in the context of the US after two hurricanes and a strike by Boeing factory workers.

Economists had previously predicted that hurricanes Helene and Milton and a strike by 33,000 Boeing factory workers in the Pacific Northwest would reduce job gains in October. However, the number of new jobs was 120,000 lower than expected.

In a statement, President Joe Biden also blamed the October figures on the “destruction” of the storm and strikes. “Job growth is expected to rebound in November as recovery and rebuilding efforts continue,” he said.

The US economy “is still going strong, with 16 million new jobs since I took office,” Biden added. “There is more work to do. We are working every day to make it cheaper for working families to pay for rent, prescription drugs, health care, and childcare.”
