Phosphorescent fireworks burst into flames on the beach in Tuy An district, causing many people to mistake it for a rare natural phenomenon.

On the evening of May 22, many people discovered an underground fire, located near the coast of Yen, Tuy An district, Phu Yen, burning for about 10 minutes. Some people used water to put out the fire, but the fire flared up even more. Some people used their phones to film the fire, posting it on social media with curiosity and speculation about the above phenomenon.
Explaining the phenomenon, Mr. Bui Sinh Nhat, Chairman of the People's Committee of An Hoa Hai Commune, said that the fire was caused by a phosphor flare, a type of flare used in war, the size of an adult's fist. Phosphorus does not burn in deep water, but when the water is shallow, it will be eroded and burn. The fire was then extinguished by local people and authorities using a fire extinguisher.

Lieutenant Colonel Chu Thai Quang, Head of the Tuy An District Military Command, said that this firecracker contains phosphorus, so when a chemical reaction occurs, it will catch fire. "This is normal and this fire phenomenon is not harmful to human health," said Lieutenant Colonel Quang.
In 2016, at the Ben Hai border area (Quang Tri), a group of construction workers dug up a 127mm naval gun containing phosphorus, causing it to smoke. The Mobile Bomb Disposal Team then arrived to handle the situation and determined that it was fired by the US fleet offshore into the Ben Hai border area during the war years. Ordnance containing phosphorus has a very high risk of explosion when exposed to high temperatures.
