Within the framework of the FEF-creativity project and the Regional Cultural and Creative Industries project "The comics industry in Vietnam and Cambodia: connecting French expertise", the French Institute in Vietnam is implementing a series of activities to promote the development of comics in Vietnam.

These activities include: connecting cooperation between French and Vietnamese authors in the field of comics, supporting Vietnamese authors and artists to improve their creativity, develop and distribute quality comics, and share experiences between French, Vietnamese and Cambodian publishers and translators.

On this occasion, the French Institute also organized a contest to search for Vietnamese comic book authors and artists.

From September 23-27, the French Institute in Vietnam and Kim Dong Publishing House organized a Master-class on comic creation under the guidance of famous French and Vietnamese artists.

At the end of the program, students will have the opportunity to present a 6-10 page comic book project for publication. The program focuses on the fundamentals of art and creativity, as well as diversifying the use of graphics and storytelling.

Among the 58 candidates, 12 young talents from across the country were selected by the French-Vietnamese jury.

To encourage young translators to enter this field, the program plans to organize 10 workshops with the participation of authors, illustrators and editors from France, along with translators from Vietnam and Cambodia to share experiences.

The workshops held at Kim Dong Publishing House from September 30 to October 2 will include both theory and practice, taking place both online and in person.

Each student will have the opportunity to translate comics and exchange experiences with their mentor translators. After the program ends, the works translated by the students will be published by the project's partner publishers.

Responding to the need for training in comic book publishing among local publishers, a specialized workshop was also held in Phnom Penh (Cambodia) to provide in-depth knowledge of comic book design and layout techniques.

Taking place from 23-25 October with the support of the French International Publishing Bureau (BIEF), the Conference will focus on perspectives and exchanges on comic book publishing in France, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Many interesting topics will be discussed, including current trends, awards and bestsellers in France; as well as an overview of the diversity of French comics for both children and adults: fictional comics, graphic novels, documentary comics, adaptations of classics…

The program features French publishers and authors: Charlotte Moundlic, Artistic Director of Rue de Sèvre Publishing House; François Le Bescond, Publishing Director of Dargaud France; and Wandrille LEROY, author, comics editor and lecturer at the Delcourt Institute.
