World War II bomb found on Paris railway tracks

(CLO) Traffic at Paris Gare du Nord train station, one of the world's busiest transit hubs, was disrupted on Friday morning after an unexploded World War II bomb was discovered on the tracks.

Police immediately cordoned off the area and launched a bomb-clearance operation. The French national railway company (SNCF) said the explosive device was found “in the middle of the tracks” the night before during maintenance work on the track in the suburb of Saint Denis, about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) north of the station.

At the request of police, all traffic to and from Gare du Nord, including local metro lines, commuter trains and international Eurostar services, was suspended until mid-morning.

Eurostar's website said at least four trains departing from Gare du Nord on Friday morning had been cancelled, and passengers were advised to reschedule. SNCF also urged travellers to postpone their journeys to avoid delays caused by the incident.

Gare du Nord is one of the busiest train stations in Europe, serving around 700,000 passengers a day and connecting to destinations in northern France, London, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Although bombs left over from previous wars are often found across France, finding them in such a densely populated area is rare.

French police have yet to comment officially on the situation. Meanwhile, bomb disposal teams are working urgently to ensure safety and restore traffic in the area as soon as possible.
