In the study, healthy adults were given 30 minutes of moderate-intensity cycling in hot conditions (35–36°C and 50% relative humidity), followed by high-intensity cycling.
Participants consumed either moderate levels of caffeine (5 mg/kg body weight) or placebo at the start of the exercise session.
Coffee helps people exercise without having to exert too much effort
The results found that when consuming coffee, the concentration of caffeine in the blood gradually increased during exercise, and the time of high-intensity exercise performed at the end of the workout was also longer. In addition, consuming coffee also helps the exerciser not have to exert much effort even when exercising at high intensity, according to Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise .
Caffeine consumption also did not exacerbate hyperventilation or cerebral hypoperfusion during exercise.
The researchers concluded: These new findings suggest that consuming coffee during exercise may be an effective strategy to improve exercise performance, especially in hot weather.
