On June 14, Bloomberg news agency reported that Germany is trying to prevent or at least ease new tariffs imposed by the European Union (EU) on Chinese electric vehicles, before the tax measure takes effect.

Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government warned that high tariffs could harm global trade and suggested the EU would negotiate with Beijing towards an "amicable" solution in early July.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck will travel to China next week, as part of efforts to find a solution.

The European auto industry has warned against tariffs, with Berlin automakers most exposed to any retaliation, with nearly a third of their sales coming to the world’s largest economy in 2023, according to trade data.

Speaking at a press conference earlier this week, Chancellor Scholz's spokesman said: "In our view, the best thing we can do is reach an amicable solution. We don't need more trade barriers. Germany needs to facilitate global trade.

In a further sign of escalation, Chinese companies have formally filed a request for an anti-dumping investigation into pork imports from the EU, the Global Times reported.
