The Mekong River and the Red River are the two largest rivers in the country, and the water resources from these two rivers are extremely important for the socio- economic development, security and defense of the country. However, due to many factors, including the impact of rapid urbanization, industrial development, climate change, typically the Yagi storm in 2024, have had a negative impact on the river basins.

At the conference, delegates discussed urgent issues related to irrigation planning, especially rising sea levels and saltwater intrusion, which seriously affect agricultural production and people's lives; irrigation planning needs to ensure a balance between economic development and environmental protection, aiming for sustainable development for both deltas.

Experts also proposed solutions to apply advanced technologies in the management and operation of irrigation systems, aiming to improve water use efficiency and minimize negative impacts on the environment; implement regional cooperation in river basins, to share information and experience, and jointly solve common challenges...

Concluding the meeting, comrade Tran Hong Ha acknowledged the efforts of the relevant agencies in developing a draft plan for the Mekong and Red River basins; and response scenarios for each situation of the two river basins.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized: Irrigation planning for the Mekong and Red River basins plays a particularly important role in the socio-economic development of the whole country. Therefore, the planning drafting agency needs to take into account the opinions of experts as a basis for developing detailed irrigation planning for each river basin. In particular, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, relevant provinces and cities need to have proactive, synchronous and effective solutions to ensure water security, serve production and people's lives, and at the same time create a space for sustainable development.
