Camera sensors from Sony are commonly used on iPhones

But when it comes to high-end smartphones, Sony's camera sensors stand out thanks to the popularity of Apple's iPhones. Both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro rely heavily on Sony's advanced image sensors for the main camera, ultra-wide camera, telephoto camera, and LiDAR.

Sony image sensors found in the latest iPhones include the 12MP IMX813 (ultra-wide camera), 48MP IMX803 (main camera), 12MP IMX593 (telephoto camera), and IMX591 (LiDAR sensor).

Sony's image sensors found in current iPhone models include the IMX713 (telephoto camera on the iPhone 13 Pro Max and 14 Pro Max), IMX714 (front camera on the iPhone 14 Pro Max and 15 Pro Max), IMX590 (ToF sensor on the iPhone 13 Pro Max and 14 Pro Max), and IMX633 (ultra-wide camera on the iPhone 14 Pro Max and 15 Pro Max).

While Samsung also supplies the main sensors for high-end phones like the Galaxy S23 Ultra, the company uses a 10MP IMX754 sensor from Sony for the telephoto camera.

Overall, Sony continues to dominate the smartphone image sensor industry with a 56% market share in the first half of 2023. Apple alone accounts for more than 55% of Sony's image sensor revenue thanks to its use of advanced 48MP and 12MP sensors in its modern iPhone lineup. In particular, the 48MP IMX803 sensor used in the latest iPhones has helped Sony's market share in the 48MP+ segment exceed 48%.

Advanced image sensors from Sony and Samsung are considered the decisive factor in the photography experience on today's high-end smartphones. The huge sales of the iPhone are partly thanks to Sony's sensor improvements.
