Potential of HAGL youth team

The list of U.23 Vietnam players currently training in Ho Chi Minh City (to prepare for the U.23 Southeast Asian tournament) includes many faces currently playing for HAGL.

They are goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien, central defender Pham Ly Duc, Dinh Quang Kiet, and striker Nguyen Quoc Viet (HAGL on loan to Ninh Binh ).

Except for Dinh Quang Kiet, the remaining three players have all played for the Vietnamese national team, and were included in the preliminary list before the 2024 AFF Cup (in November 2024), or in the list to compete with Malaysia in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers last June.

Although Trung Kien, Ly Duc and Quoc Viet have not been able to get a starting position (only Ly Duc entered the field in the match against Malaysia from the bench), the frequent presence of HAGL's young players at the national team level shows that coach Kim Sang-sik highly appreciates these "young shoots", and identifies them as a potential generation to succeed the seniors in the Vietnam national team.

Compared to other famous youth "nursery" in Vietnam such as Hanoi, PVF, SLNA or The Cong Viettel , HAGL, although not superior in terms of training technology, coach quality or philosophy, is superior in terms of giving opportunities to young players.

Only SLNA is the team that uses more "young shoots" than HAGL this season. HAGL's young players are always highly regarded, even having a starting position in the first team to ensure they play at least 15-20 matches each season in the V-League.

Goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien is an example. The 22-year-old goalkeeper was promoted to play in the V-League from 2023. He played 2 matches (2023 season) and 6 matches (2023 - 2024 season), before becoming HAGL's number one goalkeeper this season with 24 matches.

Trung Kien and Nguyen Van Viet (2002, SLNA) are rare young goalkeepers given a chance in the V-League. Having accumulated experience in the most pressured position when he was young, Trung Kien has matured with a relatively solid hand this season. The young goalkeeper of HAGL kept a clean sheet in 7 matches, 2 times saved penalties/penalties in all competitions, along with many accurate catches and important saves.

Pham Ly Duc is also a new discovery this season, with 20 starting matches (playing the entire match in all appearances). The central defender born in 2003 was promoted to the national team by coach Kim Sang-sik after only the first 6 months of his V-League career.

He has the "blood", the ability to compete in one-on-one matches and the gift of scoring goals (3 goals for HAGL this season). Ly Duc cannot compete in the Vietnam national team yet, but in the U.23 team where the HAGL center back is the most experienced player, Ly Duc becoming a pillar leading the U.23 defense is probably just a matter of time.

Striker Nguyen Quoc Viet has been the king of youth tournaments for many years (U.17, U.19 and U.21) and has played in the V-League since the 2023 season. Although he played in the first division last season, wearing the Ninh Binh Club shirt with seniors like Hoang Duc, Thanh Binh, Huu Tuan... also helped the striker from HAGL become more solid.

Coach Kim Sang-sik builds the framework

Vietnam U.23 won 5-0 against Taiwan U.23 in a friendly match on the afternoon of July 2 at Ba Ria Stadium (HCMC). Although still experimenting with the lineup by giving many faces a chance to show their skills, coach Kim Sang-sik's team operated freely and smoothly, with sharp and clear attacking moves.

Unlike the Vietnamese team, where players use many wing attacks or long balls, U.23 Vietnam is built to play more diversely and at a faster pace, thanks to coach Kim's students being young, dynamic and diligent in pressing. The U.23 Vietnam team's structure will be determined in the next 2 weeks, before the whole team enters the official tournament.

In the U.23 Southeast Asian playground, where opponents such as U.23 Thailand, U.23 Malaysia or U.23 Indonesia all desire to win the championship and train their troops thoroughly, U.23 Vietnam needs the experience and refinement of players who have played in the V-League and have played for the national team such as Ly Duc and Quoc Viet to strengthen their strength.

HAGL's star players may be lacking for the Vietnam team, but they are enough to assert themselves in the U.23 Vietnam team.
