(Dan Tri) - A Chinese man, while drunk, accidentally swallowed a teaspoon while in Thailand, thinking it was just a dream, and only discovered the incident nearly five months later.

The rare incident was reported by the South China Morning Post on June 30. Specifically, a man surnamed Yan (29 years old, Chinese) went to the hospital for a check-up because he suspected he had swallowed a piece of plastic while eating food at a restaurant.

However, instead of a piece of plastic, doctors at Zhongshan Hospital (Shanghai) discovered a 15cm long ceramic spoon stuck in his body.

The spoon was stuck in the duodenum - the first part of the small intestine. This is a very dangerous position; even the slightest movement can cause the intestine to perforate, leading to severe inflammation or bleeding.

It was then that Yan realized that his experience in Thailand in January was not a product of his imagination.

Recalling this moment, Yan said that while traveling here, he had been drinking and tried to use a teaspoon in the hotel room to induce vomiting. The spoon accidentally slipped from his hand and went into his stomach. However, because he was too drunk, the man later passed out.

When he woke up the next morning, Yan's memory was so hazy that he believed he had dreamed about swallowing the spoon. The man also attributed the uncomfortable feeling in his stomach at that time to the aftereffects of vomiting.

In the six months that followed, after returning to Shanghai, Yan continued to exercise without feeling any health problems.

After discovering the spoon stuck in his duodenum, Yan underwent endoscopic surgery to remove the foreign object on June 18. However, doctors failed on the first attempt because the spoon's surface was too slippery.

Dr Zhou Hongping, director of the Endoscopy Center at Zhongshan Hospital, then decided to use a combination of two types of forceps to pull the spoon back into the stomach before switching to using a grabber to remove it.

In this way, they successfully removed the porcelain spoon from Yan's body after 90 minutes of surgery. Yan was discharged from the hospital a few days later in a stable condition.
