On the morning of July 1, Thai press simultaneously reported that FAT President Somyot Poompanmoung had decided to resign.

Thailand football boss loses his job because of brawl at sea games

Mr. Somyot Poompanmoung resigns as FAT President

The reason is that the Thai U22 team did not win the gold medal at the 32nd SEA Games.

Even the players from the Golden Temple country, together with U22 Indonesia, created an unforgettable brawl in the final match.

“The reason for Mr. Somyot Poompanmoung's resignation as FAT President is related to the poor performance of the Thai national team.

Besides, the brawl in the men's football final at SEA Games 32 was also part of the cause," Siamsport newspaper said.

Previously, at the Annual General Meeting of the Thai Olympic Committee on the morning of June 30, the President of the Thai Olympic Committee, Mr. Prawit Wongsuwan, made harsh statements aimed at Mr. Poompanmoung.

“This is an incident that makes Thailand's image worse in the eyes of the world (Referring to the melee in the final match of SEA Games 32).

I told President Somyot Poompanmoung that if men's football does not win gold, he should resign.

Not to mention the financial issues, the recent incident has been very damaging to the national reputation. Everyone makes their own mistakes and every mistake will have to be paid for.

“I believe the President of the Football Association must resign. So must the coach and those who caused the incident,” said the President of the Thai Olympic Committee.

Mr. Somyot Poompanmoung became FAT President in 2016 with the goal of bringing the Thai team to the World Cup and into the top 100 on the FIFA rankings.

However, the best achievement of the "War Elephants" in the past 7 years was reaching the 3rd qualifying round of the 2018 World Cup and 3 AFF Cup championships.

Meanwhile, the "War Elephants" mission to enter the top 100 on the FIFA rankings was also unsuccessful.
