The 2024 World Taekwondo Championships took place in Hong Kong with a record number of 1,727 athletes from 77 countries and territories. The previous record belonged to the 2018 tournament in Taiwan with 1,274 athletes from 59 countries and territories. The Vietnamese taekwondo team participated in this year's tournament with 47 members, including 7 coaches and 40 athletes. The goal of Vietnamese taekwondo is to strive for a silver medal. However, on the opening day of the tournament, Vietnamese taekwondo athletes did more than that! Six athletes Nguyen Thi Y Binh, Tran Phuong Nhung, Nguyen Thanh Hien Linh, Nguyen Ngoc Minh Hy, Tran Dang Khoa, and Ho Thanh An excellently brought home the gold medal in the creative team event for the over-17 age group with 8,680 points.

This event has 15 teams competing in 2 rounds. Round 1 selects 8 teams to the final ranking round. Vietnam taekwondo's victory was extremely close, when Mexico won the silver medal with 8,660 points. Italy and the Philippines both won the bronze medal with 8,500 points and 8,400 points respectively. In addition to the gold medal, Vietnam taekwondo also won 1 bronze medal in the youth men's team event. An impressive achievement when the tournament only lasted one day. More importantly, the Vietnam taekwondo team has not won any gold medals since the 2016 World Taekwondo Championship. The most recent time at the 2022 tournament in Korea, the team only won 1 silver medal and 9 bronze medals. The 2024 World Taekwondo Championship will continue until December 4. The Vietnam taekwondo team still has the ability to win medals in many events.
Vietnamese Taekwondo has won world gold medals from 2008 to 2016. Among them, athlete Chau Tuyet Van won world gold medals 4 times in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and has now switched to coaching.
