Florida Governor Stops Running for US President

VnExpressVnExpress21/01/2024

Florida Governor DeSantis announced he is dropping out of the White House race and expressing his support for former President Trump.

"After finishing second in the Iowa caucuses, we have considered the path forward. If there is anything I can do to improve the outcome or cause more of my opponents to drop out, I will do it. However, I cannot ask my supporters to spend their time and money if we are not sure of winning. Therefore, today I have decided to suspend my campaign," Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced on January 21.

His decision comes less than two days before the New Hampshire primary, where polls show Governor DeSantis trailing in the state and the election looks set to be a contest between former President Donald Trump and former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.

"It's clear to me that the majority of voters who participated in the Republican primary want to give Mr. Trump another chance," the Florida governor said, expressing support for the former president.

Trump's campaign issued a statement the same day saying he was honored by the Florida governor's endorsement. "It's time to choose wisely," the statement added.

Former Ambassador Haley said Mr DeSantis had a great campaign and praised him as a good governor.

The Republican Party once had 14 candidates declare their candidacy for president. However, candidates have announced their withdrawal from the election, many of whom have turned to support former President Trump. The Republican Party now has only two candidates: Mr. Trump and Ms. Haley.

In the first primary vote in Iowa, Mr. Trump won a landslide victory with 51% of the support, far surpassing Mr. DeSantis and Ms. Haley. No candidate has ever lost a primary if they win the first two states. Mr. Trump is expected to become the Republican nominee almost certainly if he wins New Hampshire.
