Tunnel through the mountain connecting Ha Tinh and Quang Tri

(Baohatinh.vn) - Deo Ngang Tunnel through the Hoanh Son mountain range connecting Ha Tinh province and the old Quang Binh province, now Quang Tri province, was just drilled and opened on the morning of July 16.

At 9:30 a.m. on July 16, after completing the installation of explosives, Song Da 10 Joint Stock Company proceeded to detonate the mines, demolish the last blocks of rock, and officially opened the Deo Ngang tunnel through the Hoanh Son mountain range.

The blasting of the Deo Ngang tunnel took place in the correct order and safely. When the construction site was safe, workers, excavators and trucks quickly moved into the tunnel to clear and transport soil and rock out.

Mr. Mai Xuan Tan - Project Executive Director (Railway Project Management Board, Ministry of Construction ) said: Deo Ngang Tunnel is one of the critical items of the project to upgrade and expand a number of bridges and tunnels on National Highway 1. The opening of Deo Ngang Tunnel marks an important milestone of the project. The unit opened the tunnel 1 month ahead of schedule and strives to complete and put the project into operation in December 2025.

The Deo Ngang Tunnel expansion is 650m long, of which the tunnel body is 555m long, 10.5m wide with 2 lanes, designed for a speed of 80km/h. The Deo Ngang Tunnel crosses the Hoanh Son mountain range, starting at Hoanh Son ward, Ha Tinh province (Ky Nam ward, old Ky Anh town) and ending at Phu Trach commune, Quang Tri province (Quang Dong commune, Quang Trach district, old Quang Binh province).

Deo Ngang Tunnel has a total contract value of 219 billion VND, and was started on January 13, 2025. Along with the construction of the main tunnel, the contractor is synchronously implementing the access road items, lighting system, and fire prevention and fighting system. The construction progress of the items up to this point is on schedule.

Upon completion, Deo Ngang tunnel will operate two parallel tunnels with a roadbed width of 20.5m, providing four motor vehicle lanes and two non-motor vehicle lanes.

In the project to upgrade and expand a number of bridges and tunnels on National Highway 1 with a total investment of nearly 2,000 billion VND approved by the Ministry of Transport , now the Ministry of Construction, Deo Ngang road tunnel will be built with a new tunnel to the west of the current tunnel.

The new tunnel is 555m long and 10.5m wide. It is scheduled to be completed in 2025.

When completed, Deo Ngang Tunnel will operate two parallel tunnels with a roadbed width of up to 20.5m, providing four lanes for motor vehicles and two lanes for non-motorized vehicles. The Deo Ngang Tunnel expansion project, when completed, is expected to meet the increasing traffic demand on National Highway 1 through Ha Tinh and Quang Tri provinces.
