The call was made at a Summit hosted by the African Union (AU) under the theme “Equity at the heart of the AU Decade of Education” on the occasion of the Day of the African Child.

Africa continues to face serious inequalities in access to and quality of education. This requires a concerted effort across the continent to increase the participation and prioritization of children in education policies, especially children with disabilities, girls, children in conflict-affected areas and children from minority communities.

At the conference, experts and policymakers called on countries on the continent to develop child-centered policies to promote children's full participation in education and other essential areas of development.

Speaking at the Conference, AU Commission Director for Education, Science and Technology Madougou Saidou stressed the need for strong political will, strategic investment and data-driven policy making to realise the goals of the African Decade of Education 2024-2034.

The conference also noted progress in some African countries in getting children into school, as well as recent regional commitments to expand access to quality education.

As an important platform for African policymakers and experts to share experiences, the continent-wide conference also promotes regional dialogue and partnerships to accelerate efforts towards setting and achieving national standards in the education sector, towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of inclusive and quality education.
