North Korea warns of 'toughest response' to US

North Korea said on January 26 that Pyongyang should maintain the "toughest response" to the United States if Washington ignores its sovereignty and security interests.

North Korea's Foreign Ministry issued a statement on January 26 criticizing the US-South Korea air drills, days after US President Donald Trump said he intended to contact North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

“The actual situation requires that the DPRK must deal with the US with the toughest countermeasures as long as the US continues to ignore the sovereignty and security interests of the DPRK. This is the best option to deal with the US,” the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoted a statement from the DPRK’s Foreign Ministry .

Pyongyang has criticized the four-day joint air drills between Seoul and Washington, which were conducted at an air base in Wonju, South Korea, last week, as well as a recent trilateral air exercise involving Japan. North Korea called the exercises a “grave challenge” to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea's Foreign Ministry warned that such moves would lead to corresponding countermeasures, stressing that Pyongyang would not allow "an imbalance of power," according to Yonhap.

The announcement from North Korea came days after US President Donald Trump called Kim Jong-un a “smart guy” and expressed his desire to meet the North Korean leader.

During Mr. Trump's first term, the US leader met Mr. Kim three times, of which the third meeting in June 2019 at the Panmunjom demilitarized zone marked the first time a sitting US president set foot on North Korean territory.
