A spokesman for the North Korean Ministry of National Defense issued a statement on October 18, confirming that the country had found debris from a crashed South Korean military unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
The representative of the Ministry of National Defense affirmed that “the involvement of South Korean military "gangsters" in the serious provocation that violated the sovereignty of the DPRK has been clearly proven, through the discovery of decisive physical evidence and an objective, scientific investigation of this incident.”
According to the spokesman, on October 13, the Pyongyang City Police Department discovered debris of a crashed UAV in the area near Hyongjesan district.
A joint investigation team of the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of State Security and other relevant professional agencies conducted a forensic examination. As a result, North Korean authorities “scientifically proved that the UAV came from South Korea.”
Through technical inspection and analysis, experts assessed that this is a "light, long-range reconnaissance" UAV equipped for the "UAV Operations Command" of the Korean military.
“Considering the shape of the UAV, the estimated flight time, the leaflet drop box attached to the lower part of the UAV, etc., it is very likely that this UAV was the one that dropped leaflets in downtown Pyongyang. However, no conclusion has been reached,” the statement said.
The spokesman of the DPRK's Ministry of National Defense emphasized that "if the act of violating the territory, airspace and sea of the DPRK by South Korean military means is discovered and confirmed again, it will be regarded as a serious military provocation against the sovereignty of the DPRK and a declaration of war, so immediate retaliatory action will be taken."
Previously, the South Korean government refused to confirm whether such UAVs were used and, if so, whether they were operated by the military or civilians.
Tensions between the two Koreas have escalated since North Korea began launching balloons containing trash across the border toward South Korea in late May.
In response, Seoul restarted propaganda broadcasts, angering Pyongyang.
North Korea has stepped up its hostile rhetoric in recent days, accusing the South Korean military of flying drones over the capital Pyongyang for three days in October and threatening a “horrible disaster” if drones are again detected in North Korean airspace.
