60 years ago, in response to the requirements and tasks of the revolution and the preparation of forces to fight back against the US imperialists' use of air force and navy to escalate attacks on the North, on August 4, 1965, the Ministry of National Defense decided to establish the second fighter air regiment, with the code name Regiment 923, codenamed Yen The Air Force Group.

After its establishment, overcoming all difficulties and challenges, the Regiment quickly stabilized its forces and actively organized training.

Right in the first combat sortie on March 4, 1966, the pilots of the Regiment bravely and intelligently shot down an F-4 aircraft and destroyed the formation of American aircraft in the sky of Van Yen - Moc Chau ( Son La ). From here, opened a period of continuous fighting and many glorious victories of the unit.

Names such as: Pham Thanh Chung, Ngo Duc Mai, Le Hai, Nguyen Van Bay, Luu Huy Chao, Le Xuan Dy, Tu De, Han Van Quang, Hoang Mai Vuong, Nguyen Van Luc... have entered the history of the Vietnam People's Air Force.

From its founding until the end of the resistance war against the US to save the country in April 1975, the 923rd Air Force Regiment shot down 107 aircraft, damaged 2 US Navy destroyers, and destroyed 24 aircraft of the Saigon puppet regime. In particular, the raid on Tan Son Nhat airport on April 28, 1975 by the Quyet Thang Squadron contributed significantly to the victory of the Ho Chi Minh Campaign, completely liberating the South and reunifying the country.

With its outstanding achievements, on September 3, 1973, the Regiment was honored to receive the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces. Many groups and individuals of the Regiment also received this noble title. Of which, Squadron 4 was honored 3 times. Squadron 2 was honored 2 times. The Regiment was presented by Uncle Ho with 3 flags "Determination to defeat the American invaders", 1 flower basket and 92 badges of Uncle Ho given to pilots who shot down American planes...

In his speech at the ceremony, Colonel and pilot Tran Thanh Hai, Commander of the 923rd Air Force Regiment, affirmed that 60 years of building, fighting and growing up is a journey of perseverance and constant striving of generations of officers, pilots, workers and soldiers of the Regiment.

From the early days of fighting on Mig-17 aircraft provided by the Soviet Union, to now performing the task of exploiting, using and mastering Su-30MK2 aircraft, the most modern generation of fighter aircraft in the world, Air Force Regiment 923 has always been one of the leading flags of the Vietnam People's Air Force. This is demonstrated by the outstanding achievements in the past 10 years such as: Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister in 2015; 5 emulation flags from the Ministry of National Defense; 4 emulation flags from the Air Defense - Air Force Service; first prize in the overall competition at the Air Force Guidance Competition for the entire army and live-fire and bombing drills for the air force organized by the Air Defense - Air Force Service in 2023...

In recent years, the Regiment's pilots and aircraft have always been the main force, directly participating in flight demonstrations to celebrate important events: Vietnam International Defense Exhibition (2022, 2024); The 50th Anniversary of the Liberation of the South, National Reunification and the upcoming 80th Anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day September 2. This is an honor, pride, and also a motivation for the unit to continue to strive to fulfill all tasks, worthy of being a loyal political force, a trusted fighting force of the Party, State and people.

At the ceremony, authorized by the President, Major General Bui Thien Thau awarded the Third Class Fatherland Protection Medal to Air Force Regiment 923.
