China sees humanoid robots shaping the future of its economy

China will aim to establish a humanoid robot innovation system to make breakthroughs in some key technologies and ensure the safe and efficient supply of core components, the MIIT said. It also called for humanoid robots to become a major new economic growth engine in China by 2027.

By then, the technological innovation of humanoid robots will be significantly improved, a safe and reliable industrial supply chain system will be formed, and an internationally competitive industrial ecosystem will be built, enabling China to reach the world 's advanced level, the document said.

This is the latest step China has taken to boost its technological self-sufficiency and boost the development of its local robotics industry as it faces stiff competition from the US in major technology areas such as chips. The World Robotics 2022 report released by the International Federation of Robotics shows that China has made significant progress in the field of industrial robots, surpassing the US for the first time in 2021 to become the world's fifth most automated country.

According to guidance shared by MIIT, industries such as home services, agriculture , healthcare, and logistics may see a boom in the use of robots. MIIT believes that humanoid robots may become another disruptive innovation after smartphones and tablets, and may emerge as a technology that can change human production and lifestyle, reshaping the global industrial development pattern.

The document also calls for the industry to focus heavily on the “cerebellum,” “brain,” and “limbs” of humanoid robots with the help of AI breakthroughs such as large language models. In addition, the document calls for the robotics industry to step up the development of humanoid robots so that they can be used in dangerous and harsh conditions.
