Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong visited the North Korean capital Pyongyang this week. Sun met with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui on January 26, after meeting his counterpart Pak Myong-ho the day before.
Reporting on the meeting between Sun and Choe, North Korea's KCNA news agency said on January 27 that the two sides agreed to "continue to strengthen tactical cooperation and jointly safeguard common core interests." The report also said the meeting took place in a "comradely and friendly atmosphere," noting that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between North Korea and China.

The meeting came after Foreign Minister Choe returned from Moscow this week, where she met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, underscoring the deepening bilateral ties.
China said on January 26 that Beijing and Pyongyang had pledged to strengthen strategic communication "at all levels" and reaffirmed their "unchanged stance" on deepening bilateral ties, as Vice Foreign Minister Sun met his counterpart Pak in Pyongyang.
Mr. Sun arrived in Pyongyang on January 25, passing through the border city of Sinuiju. This is considered a reciprocal visit after Vice Minister Pak Myong-ho visited China last month.
North Korea has significantly strengthened ties with Russia and China since the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out in February 2022, as well as amid recent tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
