Ukraine prepares to attack Crimea bridge

(Dan Tri) - Ukrainian Navy Commander Alexey Neizhpapa announced that Kiev had "active discussions" about conducting a third attack on the Crimea bridge.

The British newspaper The Observer noted that the Ukrainian Navy Commander "expressed optimism" that Kiev would succeed in destroying the Crimea Bridge (also known as the Kerch Bridge), built by Russia to connect its territory with the Moscow-controlled Crimean peninsula.

He stressed that the two previous attacks had damaged road and railway structures, making it impossible for the Russian army to transport heavy train cars across the railway bridge.

"The Russians understand that we are actively discussing the third operation," the Ukrainian Navy commander said.

Neizhpapa also described the war with Russia as a technological race dominated by unmanned vehicles. He said Moscow had developed “quite effective” methods to counter attacks by naval drone boats.

Ukraine responded by turning the drone into a fast-moving attack platform. Engineers added anti-aircraft weapons to shoot down helicopters as well as FPV drones, he said.

Russia, which took control of the Crimean peninsula in 2014, has since built a 19km bridge across the Kerch Strait, the only road and rail link between the peninsula and mainland Russia.

Since the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out more than three years ago, the bridge has become an important supply route for Moscow’s forces on the southern front. This is also the reason why the Crimean Bridge has repeatedly been the target of Ukrainian attacks aimed at cutting off Moscow’s vital supply route.

Ukraine has repeatedly stressed that this is a legitimate target of Kiev forces.

Previously, Ukraine conducted at least two successful attacks on the Crimean bridge.

The first attack, with a truck loaded with explosives, occurred on the morning of October 8, 2022, the day after Russian President Vladimir Putin's 70th birthday.

The following day, Russia's opposition news agency Meduza described the Crimean bridge, which was damaged in the explosion on October 8, as one of the most heavily guarded areas in the world , both on land, in the air, at sea and even from space.

Ukraine launched a second attack on the night of July 17, 2023, using the navy's Sea Baby unmanned boat.

Later, multiple sources confirmed that Russian forces had installed barges south of the Crimean bridge, which were supposed to become a "barrier" against Ukrainian unmanned vehicles at sea.

Speaking on national television on August 2, 2024, Director of Ukraine's Defense Intelligence Kyrylo Budanov said that Ukraine does not rule out the possibility of the Crimean bridge being destroyed in a few months.

Earlier, he said, Kiev could use long-range weapons provided by the West to target the Crimean bridge.

In response, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow considers threats to attack the Crimean bridge to be "terrorism".

Russia accused the West of providing weapons to help Ukraine carry out attacks on the Crimean bridge as well as Russia's Black Sea Fleet in the Crimean peninsula.
