It's not just about quantity

For many years, the appearance of too many beauty contests has been considered the cause of the "boring" and "degradation" of this entertaining activity.

However, in reality, "beauty queen overload" is not the only factor that makes many people turn their backs on beauty contests.

In 2024, according to statistics, there will be about 60 "large and small" beauty contests held in Vietnam, with hundreds of people honored. This year, in June alone, there will be 3 final nights of the Miss Universe Vietnam (June 21), Miss Vietnam (June 27), Miss Earth Vietnam (June 28) - held in Khanh Hoa, Hue, Hai Phong respectively. And, behind these contests are the shadows of other contests that are being or will be launched, such as Miss Grand Vietnam, Miss Ocean Vietnam, Miss Sea Vietnam Global, not to mention the name Miss National that was just known through a press conference...

It's a long list with names that are either unfamiliar or familiar, but quantity isn't the main cause of boredom.

The “degradation”, as assessed by many people, also lies in the behavior of beauty queens and beauty queens during their “reign”; the trend of forming groups to support “chickens” and spreading information that is detrimental to other beauties; the whispers about the so-called support thanks to the “long-legged - rich” relationship and the judging process in some “small” competitions...

Public opinion is so negative about beauty contests that the related "drama" is now considered "inevitable", "unavoidable", "normal". Most recently, after the final night of Miss Universe Vietnam (June 21), information arose about a contestant who "dropped out" and hinted at a result that could be "foreseen". In an international contest that took place before, after a Vietnamese contestant won the runner-up prize, there were many comments insulting this contestant, criticizing her beauty even though this was a contest that focused on physical factors, and the way a "Western" panel of judges judged beauty was inherently different from the concept of many Asians. That is what happened to Miss Universe Vietnam 2017 H'Hen Nie when she "made it to the top" of an international contest where there was no bias about skin color, no one said "what a dark beauty queen"...

To restore the prestige of beauty contests in Vietnam, it is not only necessary to “clean up” the contests that were set up for profit. What is also needed is to create transparency in the criteria and judging methods to quell the “drama” as well as to select the beauty queens, beauty queens, and beauties worthy of the awards.
