Comrade Phung The Tai's real name is Phung Van Thu (1920-2014). He was born in Van Nhan commune, Phu Xuyen, Hanoi. Growing up in a poor family, he wandered to China to make a living from a young age. In 1939, he became enlightened about the revolution and was admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam .
After that, he was assigned the special task of being Uncle Ho's bodyguard. Realizing that this person was loyal, diligent, strong, good at martial arts and fluent in Chinese, Uncle Ho trusted him very much and changed his name to Phung Huu Tai (meeting a talented person). Later, fearing that Tai would be arrogant, he changed his name to Phung The Tai.

Mr. Phung The Tai is known as Uncle Ho's first bodyguard when he returned from Kunming (China) to directly lead the Vietnamese revolution.
It was in 1940, comrade Vu Anh assigned him to protect Mr. Tran (Uncle Ho's alias in Kunming in 1940). Looking at his attitude and listening to comrade Vu Anh's careful instructions, he secretly thought that this was a very important person. Later, he learned that Mr. Tran was leader Nguyen Ai Quoc. And he became Uncle Ho's first bodyguard from that moment.
In the memoir “Uncle Ho - Unforgettable Memories”, this general had special respect for Uncle Ho: “Uncle Ho gradually led me, from a homeless, uneducated, unruly child, to become a revolutionary general officer, contributing more or less to the cause of national liberation. This is truly a miracle that sometimes I think I could not even dream of.”

In 1945, Mr. Phung The Tai reported to Uncle Ho and asked him to let him go to fight directly. Uncle Ho agreed and unanimously let Phung The Tai be the Squad Leader of the That Khe Liberation Army Squad. After holding many different positions, during the resistance war against the French, he commanded an infantry regiment of the 320th Division.
During the anti-American war, he was Commander of the Air Defense - Air Force (1963 - 1967) and then Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army (1967 - 1987).

Mr. Phung The Tai holds the rank of Senior Lieutenant General of the Vietnam People's Army. He was awarded this rank in 1986. Before that, he had held the ranks of Major General (1974) and Lieutenant General (1980).

The Air Defense - Air Force Museum still preserves his P38 pistol. This pistol was given by the Viet Minh organization to Senior Lieutenant General Phung The Tai to protect Uncle Ho in the years before 1945.
The gun was kept by the General until his death in 2014, after which his family donated it to the military museum. As the first bodyguard, absolutely loyal to President Ho Chi Minh, the gun was an inseparable item during his lifetime.
