According to preliminary data from the General Department of Customs, in May 2025, Vietnam imported about 336,000 tons of wheat with a total value of more than 91 million USD, down 56.6% in volume and 56.2% in value compared to the previous month.

In the first 5 months of 2025, the total cost of wheat imports reached more than 728 million USD for 2.7 million tons, down 3.2% in volume and 6.5% in value compared to the same period in 2024. The average import price reached 265 USD/ton, down 4%.

Brazil remained the largest wheat supplier to Vietnam, with nearly 989,000 tonnes, worth US$254 million, although the volume decreased by 12.5% and the value decreased by 9.9% over the same period.

Australia took second place, supplying 650,000 tonnes of wheat, worth $177 million, up 23% in volume and 6.5% in value.

The US recorded remarkable growth with 339,971 tons, worth 93.04 million USD, up 52.5% in volume and 26.3% in value.

In particular, Russia emerged as a potential supplier, reaching more than 161,000 tons, equivalent to 40 million USD, an increase of nearly 200% in both volume and value, rising to 5th place in the list of countries exporting wheat to Vietnam.

Despite being a strong exporter of agricultural products such as rice, coffee, cashew nuts, pepper and cassava, Vietnam is still among the world's leading importers and consumers of some agricultural products, including wheat.

According to the Vietnam Livestock Association, imported wheat is mainly used to produce animal feed. Since Vietnam does not grow wheat, the entire supply depends on imports.

Wheat is one of the most important global food crops, also known as barley or sorghum, and is one of the oldest cereal grains.

Second only to corn and rice in terms of production, wheat is an essential food source for humans worldwide.

Wheat is widely used to produce flour, bread, noodles, confectionery, beer, wine and even biofuel.
