Vietnam has more virtual mobile networks

VNSky (under VNPay ) started testing in Nghe An from May 2023 and officially expanded its operations nationwide from July 7, becoming the fourth mobile virtual network (MVNO) in Vietnam. The unit does not own mobile telecommunications infrastructure, instead it links with existing network operators to buy traffic and provide it to users.

VNSky will use the infrastructure of MobiFone network and plans to expand its partnership in the future. Mr. Nguyen Van Dung - Director of VNSky said that the explosion of online connection, learning, entertainment and business platforms has led to an increasing demand for mobile data, making the use of a SIM card unable to meet users' needs.

The need to consume large amounts of high-speed data on mobile devices is causing users to seek more optimal service packages from different carriers.

The mobile virtual network model allows operators to quickly deploy services nationwide by leveraging infrastructure from partners, saving resources. Although dependent on infrastructure, MVNOs have the advantage of focusing on product design suitable for specific user groups, and most of the current mobile virtual network operators are large enterprises with product ecosystems related to end users.

"Taking advantage of existing telecommunications infrastructure helps the network operator have nationwide coverage immediately. The network operator will focus resources on researching and developing digital and telecommunications services," said Mr. Dung.

In Vietnam, the MVNO model is quite new. Before VNSky, there were a number of other businesses operating, including iTel (087), Reddi - now Wintel (055), Local (089) in cooperation with two network operators Vinaphone and MobiFone. According to statistics from the Department of Telecommunications ( Ministry of Information and Communications ), by the end of April 2023, virtual mobile network service providers in Vietnam had more than 2.5 million users, accounting for 2.1% of the total number of mobile subscribers nationwide.

Last June, FPT Retail also obtained a virtual mobile network license, planning to cooperate with MobiFone to enter the mobile telecommunications market.
