Vietnam plans to grow 21,000 hectares of ginseng by 2030

It is expected that by 2030, nine provinces will grow 21,000 hectares of ginseng, harvesting 300 tons per year, and ginseng will become a high - value commodity, a key product in the pharmaceutical sector.

The program for developing Vietnamese ginseng to 2030, with a vision to 2045, was signed by Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang on June 1. The goal is that by 2030, the natural genetic resources of Vietnamese ginseng will be preserved, associated with forest protection and development, and biodiversity conservation in forest ecosystems.

Nine provinces in the program will plant 21,000 hectares, of which Quang Nam 8,400, Kon Tum 8,100, Lai Chau 3,000, Dien Bien 500, Gia Lai 800 hectares. Lam Dong, Lao Cai, Thua Thien Hue, Nghe An provinces each have 8 to 40 hectares. Ginseng is grown under the canopy of protective forests, production forests and other agricultural land, not in special-use forests.

The program sets a target of 100% of ginseng growing areas being granted growing area codes and geographical indications. By 2030, the output will be 300 tons per year with an area of 1,000 hectares, ensuring origin, meeting GACP - WHO standards or equivalent. Ginseng is used to produce medicine, health protection foods, cosmetics, and macrobiotic products. Quang Nam is chosen as the place to research and invest in developing the pharmaceutical industry from ginseng.

By 2045, Vietnamese ginseng will become an internationally branded product with high export value, creating an important source of income for localities, striving to make Vietnam a major ginseng producer in the world.

To achieve the goal, the Government assigned the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to coordinate with relevant ministries and branches to implement. Funding sources include the state budget, funding sources, aid, and other legal sources mobilized from domestic and foreign organizations and individuals.

There are four types of Vietnamese ginseng, including Ngoc Linh ginseng ( Panax vietnamensis Ha et Grushv), Lai Chau ginseng ( Panax vietnamensis var. fiscidiscus K.Komatsu, S.Zhu & SQCai), Lang Biang ginseng ( Panax vietnamensis var. langbianensis N.V.Duy, VTTran & L.N.Trieu) and Puxailaileng ginseng (Panax sp).

Of these, Ngoc Linh ginseng is grown on the mountain of the same name, in Kon Tum and Quang Nam provinces. This type has the highest value, considered a "national treasure". Currently, Kon Tum and Quang Nam have planted and developed more than 6,000 hectares of ginseng under the forest canopy. However, the two provinces are lacking planning for the development of raw material areas, lack of quality seed sources, and lack of deep processing facilities. The work of promoting, advertising, and building the Ngoc Linh ginseng brand is still limited.
