On January 14, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang answered a reporter's question asking for Vietnam's viewpoint on the election results of the head of Taiwan (China).

Ms. Hang said that on the basis of steadfastly implementing the "one China" policy, Vietnam maintains and develops civil and non-governmental relations with Taiwan in the fields of economics , trade, investment, science and technology, culture, education... and does not develop any state-level relations with Taiwan.

"Vietnam respects the principle of non-interference in each other's internal affairs and believes that peace , stability and cooperation in the Taiwan Strait play an important role in the region and the world," the Foreign Ministry spokesman emphasized.

Lai Ching-teh won Taiwan's presidential election on January 13, Reuters reported. His main rival from the Kuomintang party, Hou You-yi, has conceded defeat in the election.

Lai faced two opponents, Hou and former Taipei mayor Hou Yu-ih of the Kuomintang and former Taipei mayor Dr. Ko Wen-chez of the TPP, which was only established in 2019.

Mr Lai will become the island's next leader, succeeding Ms Tsai Ing-wen. He will take office on January 20.

Lai, 64, served as vice president of Taiwan before running for president. He was the island's chief executive and also served in Taiwan's legislature.

Voters in Taiwan also went to the polls on January 13 to elect seats in the legislature, but the results are not yet known. If no party wins a majority, this could hamper Lai’s ability to pass bills and budgets.
