Vietnam owns a precious ginseng species, the pharmacological effects are not inferior to the world famous ginseng species.

Recently, the Vietnam - Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST), Ministry of Science and Technology organized a scientific workshop "Quality standards of ginseng medicinal herbs (Panax spp) and health care products from ginseng".

Vietnamese ginseng is a rare medicinal herb.

Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Duc Loi, Director of the Vietnam-Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST) shared that Vietnamese ginseng is a rare medicinal herb, which has been included in the list of national products by the Government since 2017.

"Many scientific studies have proven that Vietnamese ginseng has good chemical composition and pharmacological effects and is not inferior to other precious ginseng species in the world ," said Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Duc Loi.

However, Mr. Loi emphasized that in order for Vietnamese ginseng to compete with other ginsengs on the market, there must be clear, modern and reliable quality standards. This will create the premise for research and development of Vietnamese ginseng into a national brand.

Assessing the Vietnamese ginseng industry, Professor Park Jeong Hill, Seoul National University, Korea, pointed out the current problem, that Vietnam's ginseng growing techniques and revenue are still very limited, especially there is not much scientific research on ginseng.

In Korea, there are on average about 600 scientific research projects on ginseng per year. However, this number in Vietnam is only about 13 projects, very little to develop the ginseng industry. To promote the development of the ginseng industry, Korea also has a separate law for the ginseng industry. In which, there are full regulations on cultivation, production process, and inspection.

According to Professor Park Jeong Hill, the techniques and methods for cultivating ginseng in Vietnam are not yet standard, while scientific research on Vietnamese ginseng is not strong. He further emphasized the need to protect gene sources.

Professor Park Jeong Hill also believes that cooperation between scientists and farmers with the support of the Government is essential for the development of Vietnamese ginseng.

Experts at the workshop stated that in order for Vietnam's Ngoc Linh ginseng to have the opportunity to become a famous brand, the first thing is to build a methodical plan, keep the original genes, not crossbreed and preserve the precious ginseng breed.

In order for Vietnamese ginseng to promote its advantages and develop further, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology - Bui The Duy hopes that there will be a project to research and transfer technology, cooperate in production, and especially connect to bring the latest technology from Korea into research and processing for Vietnamese ginseng.
