King Charles III has made his first public appearance since Buckingham Palace announced he was undergoing treatment for cancer. The monarch walked to a church on the royal Sandringham estate where he lives on Sunday morning (February 12).

The 75-year-old monarch waved and smiled at well-wishers who had gathered nearby to catch a glimpse of him. The king was accompanied by his wife, Queen Camilla, before entering the 11am service at St Mary Magdalene Church.

The king and queen then smiled and waved to the media as they returned to their home at Sandringham House.

In a message released by Buckingham Palace on Saturday, King Charles thanked the public for their support since news of his cancer diagnosis broke. “As all those affected by cancer know, such kind thoughts are a great source of comfort and encouragement,” the monarch said.

The King added that “it is gratifying to know that sharing my own diagnosis has helped to promote public understanding of the work of all the organisations supporting cancer patients and their families across the UK and the wider world ”.

Last month, King Charles was hospitalized for routine surgery to treat an enlarged prostate. But on Monday, Buckingham Palace announced that the king had been diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer during that treatment. He has begun treatment for the cancer and is taking a break from public activities in the meantime.

The king is currently staying at Sandringham, about 100 miles from London.
