Speaking ahead of his first bilateral meeting at the White House with US President Joe Biden on the issue, British Chancellor Rishi Sunak stressed that the UK will host the first global summit on safe artificial intelligence, bringing together key countries and leading technology companies.

During the bilateral meeting, Prime Minister Sunak is keen to convince President Biden that the UK can play a leading role in AI, with the hope of creating a UK-based global regulator and a CERN-style research centre.

In addition, the British Prime Minister will announce an increase in the number of scholarships funded by the British Government for students to study and do postgraduate research at UK and US universities, to improve the overall level of expertise in subjects.

The summit, to be held in the UK later this year, will examine the risks of AI and discuss how to mitigate them through international action, the UK government said. It will also provide a platform for countries to work together to further develop a common approach to mitigating these risks.

Several governments are looking to mitigate the dangers of the emerging technology, which has seen a surge in investment and user adoption in recent months following the emergence of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Regulators around the world are scrambling to come up with rules governing the use of generative AI — technology that can generate text and images.

According to the plan, on June 8, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and US President Joe Biden will discuss technology issues in this bilateral meeting. Specifically, focusing on the benefits of AI for humans, such as helping paralyzed people to walk or discovering antibiotics to kill superbugs. But he also warned about the speed of development and the need to establish safe corridors.
