Trends in international joint training at universities

VnExpressVnExpress02/03/2024

International training cooperation allows universities to expand access to global quality education , while students have the opportunity to "study abroad on site" at a reasonable cost.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam, as of September 2023, Vietnam has linked education training with more than 50 countries and territories. Of which, the top 5 countries include the UK, the US, France, Australia and South Korea. At the same time, there are more than 600 joint training programs between Vietnamese higher education institutions and foreign higher education institutions, with UK universities alone having over 90 programs. The UK is currently the leading partner with the number of joint training programs in Vietnam, according to data from the British Council in Vietnam.

Vietnam is also considered one of the 3rd largest Transnational Education (TNE) markets in Southeast Asia for the UK with more than 7,000 students studying (2021 data). According to the report "Towards a more competitive international education environment in Vietnam" conducted by the British Council, Vietnam is showing high demand and spending for advanced educational standards, and has great potential for educational cooperation with the UK.

Considering the proportion of foreign joint training programs in each field, more than 60% are concentrated in the economic and management sectors; 25% are programs related to science and technology; less than 10% are in the social sciences and humanities, and the rest are in other fields.

In fact, the foreign joint training market has flourished in the past 10 years. In the past, when the form of joint training was not yet popular, by promoting "study abroad on-site and receive an international degree", many parents and students found this to be the optimal choice thanks to benefits such as reasonable costs, international quality degrees, saving time, improving foreign language skills, etc.

Dr. Dong Xuan Dam, Director of the International Training Institute of Phenikaa University, assessed that international cooperation in training is considered by many Vietnamese universities as an inevitable direction in the period of international integration. International cooperation activities, including training linkages, play an important role in the development of higher education institutions in Vietnam, allowing Vietnamese universities to access advanced training technology and training management, improving research and training capacity, thereby expanding access to high-quality international educational services for Vietnamese learners at reasonable costs.

"Students studying international programs will simultaneously develop professional skills and foreign language skills for future work," said Mr. Dam.

However, as international joint programs are increasingly popular, students have more choices, increasing competition between transnational joint programs, while also raising the question of training quality and how to attract learners in the context of many changes in Vietnam's higher education.

In this context, the UWE Bristol@Phenikaa Campus Program organized a discussion on "Transnational Education (TNE): A lever to improve the quality of education in Vietnam" on March 10, broadcast online on VnExpress with the aim of providing information about TNE joint programs, especially joint programs with the UK and the original university model to the quality of higher education in Vietnam.

At the seminar, issues such as the importance of international cooperation in education, forms of transnational education training in Vietnam, especially between Vietnam and the UK, advantages and limitations of the original training model, as well as information about the original university program UWE Bristol@Phenikaa Campus will be discussed and clarified by experts.
