US police arrest 'extremely dangerous' Brazilian prison escapee

Footage shown on CNN shows heavily armed police handcuffing Brazilian prisoner Danelo Cavalcante, removing his shirt before putting him in the back of a police car, according to AFP.

Cavalcante has been evading police in the suburbs and countryside west of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, since escaping from prison on August 31. About 500 police officers using helicopters, drones and dogs, with the support of special forces units, are involved in the hunt for the Brazilian.

Cavalcante was convicted of murdering his girlfriend, stabbing her dozens of times. Just as he began serving his sentence, Cavalcante scaled the prison wall and tore down two rows of barbed wire.

Police then struggled to narrow down Cavalcante's location in a densely wooded area. However, Cavalcante repeatedly appeared on private security cameras and even wildlife cameras, turning the prisoner's escape into a kind of grim reality TV show, according to AFP.

During his time on the run, Cavalcante broke into several homes, stole clothes, food, trucks, and even shaved his beard.

On September 12, Cavalcante entered a private garage to steal a rifle and then escaped from the homeowner's house, police said, declaring Cavalcante "armed and extremely dangerous."

Following the rifle theft, authorities set up roadblocks on rural roads around the Pennsylvania village of Bucktown, where elite SWAT police and armored vehicles were also deployed, according to AFP.

Earlier, US police increased the reward for information on Cavalcante's whereabouts from $20,000 to $25,000. Cavalcante is also wanted for murder in Brazil, according to US police.
