AFP news agency reported that foreign ministers Antony Blinken (US), Kamikawa Yoko (Japan), Penny Wong (Australia) and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar (India) held talks in Tokyo, Japan.

After the dialogue, the above officials issued a joint statement calling for the establishment of a "free and open" Pacific region.

The joint statement stressed: "We are extremely concerned about the situation in the East China Sea and the South China Sea, and reaffirm our strong opposition to any unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo by force."

The four countries' diplomatic "chiefs" continued to express "serious concerns about the militarization of disputed features and coercive and intimidatory actions in the South China Sea".

The Quad grouping pledged to promote cooperation in the field of cybersecurity to protect supply chains and critical infrastructure, including submarine cables.

After leaving Tokyo, Secretary of State Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will hold security discussions with another Asian ally, the Philippines.

At their most recent meeting in September last year in New York, the Quad foreign ministers issued a joint statement calling for addressing “challenges to the global maritime rules-based order, including those related to maritime claims, as well as in the South China Sea and the East China Sea.”
