DIFF: A typical model for the cooperation between government and businesses

DNVN - On the afternoon of July 21, the Organizing Committee of the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival 2025 (DIFF 2025) announced figures showing the explosion in the number of visitors and revenue of this event as well as the success from the support of local authorities and businesses.

DIFF is increasingly enhanced in scale and stature.

DIFF 2025 attracted more than 1.88 million visitors to Da Nang City, an increase of 26% compared to DIFF 2024, of which international visitors reached nearly 770,000. Revenue from accommodation, food and beverage, and travel during the 2 months of this event is estimated at 5,600 billion VND, nearly double that of DIFF 2024.

“The value of this festival cannot be measured by money but by the joy of tourists, the pride of Da Nang people and the cultural and economic values it brings to the city. For us, it is a completely worthy investment,” said Mr. Huynh Nam Thang, Vice President of Sun Group Central Region.

Mr. Sandeep Arya - Indian Ambassador to Vietnam said that this was the second time he attended DIFF and noticed that the quality and scale of the festival is growing. He believes that this festival is becoming a big attraction for international tourists, including tourists from India.

In the past 13 DIFF events, the 6 years of Sun Group's support have helped Da Nang City reduce the financial burden of hundreds of billions of VND each year and share the worries from the idea generation to the event implementation. These 6 years have also witnessed a completely new look for DIFF, with a stature that not many developed countries have.

From a 3-night fireworks competition, DIFF 2025 will be upgraded to a two-month summer international fireworks festival with 6 nights of performance, 8-10 international teams competing. From a playground without a fixed stand in 2008, DIFF 2025's stand has grown to 10,200 seats, a stage of over 1,600m², international standard sound and lighting technology and a professional logistics system for fireworks teams from all continents.

Along with that is a series of well-organized accompanying events, creating a “sleepless summer” in the Central coastal city. Not only displaying fireworks, DIFF also stirs up the atmosphere with a series of accompanying events such as grand music festivals, vibrant street performances, art exhibitions and a series of accompanying activities at Da Nang Downtown, Sun World Ba Na Hills, My Khe beach…

Private economy not only sponsors but also creates DIFF

Ms. Nadia Shakira Wong - CEO of Global 2000, the world's leading fireworks consultancy, assessed that DIFF 2025 has become the largest fireworks festival in the world, and may even register for the Guinness record. However, attracting millions of dollars in investment for an international fireworks festival is not a simple matter.

Calling on the private sector to share the financial burden and elevate fireworks festivals is the way for major cities around the world to solve this problem. In the Philippines, the Philippine International Pyromusical Competition (PIPC), initiated by La Mancha Group International in 2010, has attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors to Manila, boosting revenue from hotels, restaurants and a range of local tourism services.

In Korea, the Seoul International Fireworks Festival is a large-scale annual fireworks festival that attracts over 1 million spectators each year, contributing to a strong stimulus for tourism and commercial spending in Seoul. Behind the success of this fireworks festival is the Hanwha Group.

For Da Nang, DIFF is a typical model of local government involvement and private sector investment. In fact, Sun Group's participation not only plays a sponsoring role but also creates DIFF.

To create sustainable development for DIFF, Da Nang City has now established a clear strategy: turning the festival into the main axis in the ecosystem of tourism - trade - entertainment events. Not simply a fireworks festival, DIFF now plays a central role connecting a series of satellite events to promote the night economy and MICE tourism events. From big music festivals, art shows, cruise tours, street activities, night cuisine... extending the length of stay and increasing spending of tourists.

Recently, the city has officially approved the land auction plan to implement the International Fireworks Festival Complex project, with a total estimated investment of up to 10,750 billion VND, with the determination to turn Da Nang into a "fireworks destination of the world". The city is currently inviting bids for a consulting package to establish the basic design and total investment for the project to build shared infrastructure at the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival Complex.

According to Vice Chairwoman of Da Nang People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi: "In the next 5 years, DIFF will not only be an art event but also a strategic driving force for the city's night-time economy, tourism and brand". To achieve that expectation, in addition to the determination of the local government, the support of pioneering businesses will be an important piece in the tourism ecosystem, making Da Nang a global destination.
