In response to this incident, some scientists have offered an explanation for why Mr. Waring and many others believe they saw a mysterious face on a mountaintop in Chile. According to them, the geological structure was mistaken for a face. Photo: movilzona. According to scientists, when looking at a complex and diverse structure, the brain will convert this dynamic, noisy information into patterns and objects that we can understand. The brain usually gets this right, but sometimes certain tendencies cause errors that mess with our perception. Scientists call this phenomenon pareidolia. Photo: timesofindia. Dr Robin Kramer, a facial recognition expert from the University of Lincoln, says the phenomenon of pareidolia explains why we can see faces in geological formations as well as almost everything else.
