Lai Ly Huynh and his Chinese opponent gave fans an exciting game. However, after 4 hours, the two players were tied. The final match had to go into a rapid game to determine the winner. Lai Ly Huynh unfortunately lost and had to accept the silver medal.

This is also the second time in history that Vietnamese chess players have won the world men's individual silver medal. Nguyen Thanh Bao is the first Vietnamese male chess player to win the world medal in 2009.

In the men's team event, Lai Ly Huynh ranked second in the men's individual event while Nguyen Minh Nhat Quang ranked 12th, so in terms of total chess achievements, Vietnam only ranked second and received a silver medal. Last year, Lai Ly Huynh and Nguyen Thanh Bao won the gold medal in the men's team event.

The Singaporean chess team won the men's standard team championship when player Ngo Tong Han ranked 3rd and Liu Yi Hao ranked 8th individually, giving the overall result the number one team result. The Malaysian men's chess team ranked 3rd.

In the women's individual results, two players Nguyen Hoang Yen and Le Thi Kim Loan were not in the top 3 players. The champion was Duong Tu Nam (China), second place was Luu Hoan (China) and third place was Ngo Lan Huong (Singapore).
