The population density in Ho Chi Minh City is 1.7 times higher than that of Hanoi.

In 2024, Ho Chi Minh City's population will be only 1 million more than Hanoi's (Ho Chi Minh City has 9.5 million people; Hanoi has 8.6 million people), but Ho Chi Minh City's population density is 1.7 times higher than Hanoi's , with 4,544 people/km2, while Hanoi's is 2,585 people/km2.

According to statistics just released by the General Statistics Office in the 2024 mid-term population census, Vietnam's population as of April 1, 2024 is 101,112,656 people. Of which, the male population is more than 50,300,000 people, accounting for 49.8%. The female population is 50,700,000 people, accounting for 50.2%.

Vietnam is the third most populous country in Southeast Asia (after Indonesia and the Philippines) and the 16th most populous country in the world.

According to statistics, Vietnam's population density is 305 people/km2, an increase of 15 people/km2 compared to 2019.

With this result, Vietnam is the country with the third highest population density in Southeast Asia, after Singapore and the Philippines.

Of which, the urban population is nearly 38,600,000 people, accounting for 38.2% of the total population of the country. People living in rural areas are 62,500,000 people, accounting for 61.8%.

The Red River Delta and the Southeast are the two regions with the highest population density in the country, at 1,126 people/km2 and 814 people/km2, respectively.

The Northern Midlands and Mountains and the Central Highlands are the two regions with the lowest population density, at 140 people/km2 and 114 people/km2, respectively.

According to statistics, the Northern Midlands and Mountains have a total population of nearly 13.4 million; the Red River Delta has nearly 24 million; the North Central and Central Coast have nearly 21 million;

The Central Highlands has more than 6.2 million people; the Southeast has more than 19 million people; and the Mekong Delta has nearly 17.6 million people.

Ho Chi Minh City leads the country in population with over 9.5 million people. Next is Hanoi with about 8.6 million people.

Of which, Ho Chi Minh City has a total area of 2,095 km2, population density of 4,544 people/km2. Meanwhile, Hanoi has an area of 3,359 km2 with a population density of 2,585 people/km2. The population density in the two cities increased compared to 2019 (respectively 2,398 people/km2 and 4,363 people/km2).

Thus, the population density in Ho Chi Minh City is 1.7 times higher than that of Hanoi.

Provinces with high population such as Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Binh Duong, Dong Nai with more than 3 million people; Hai Phong with more than 2 million people.

The province with the lowest population in the country is Bac Kan with more than 328,000 people, with a total area of 4,859 km2, population density of 67 people/km2.

Next is Lai Chau with nearly 500,000 people. Lai Chau province is also the province with the lowest population density in the country, 55 people/km2.

Next are Cao Bang province (more than 555,000 people); Kon Tum (more than 598,000 people); Ninh Thuan (609,820 people); Dien Bien (653,422 people); Quang Tri (658,619 people); Dak Nong (692,896 people); Hau Giang (728,924 people); Lao Cai (787,066).

Other provinces and cities ranked behind with about more than 800,000 people are Ha Nam; Phu Yen; Yen Bai; Hoa Binh; Lang Son.

The remaining provinces and cities have populations of more than 1 million people.
