Biomass corn growing model, a new direction in economic development

Việt NamViệt Nam08/09/2023

To open up a new direction in agricultural development for local farmers, in the coming time, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center will continue to coordinate with facilities inside and outside the province to sign contracts to stably purchase products for farmers; promote links with cooperatives, cooperative groups as well as businesses inside and outside the province to connect with farmers to produce, support with seeds, fertilizers, guide on production processes and purchase products for farmers.

In the summer-autumn crop of 2023, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center (AEC) coordinated with the Maize Research Institute to deploy a biomass corn (BSK) planting model in Phuoc Vinh commune (Ninh Phuoc), with 120 households participating, with an area of 10 hectares. Participating in the model, households were supported with 50% of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and trained and guided on BSK planting processes. Up to now, the model has initially brought economic efficiency, opening up a new direction in agricultural development for local farmers.

After more than 15 years of growing corn for grain, this summer-autumn crop, Mr. Nguyen Duc Dung's family in Bao Vinh village boldly invested in 1.5 sao of land to grow BSK variety NCH9 provided by the Maize Research Institute. After nearly 3 months of care, the family harvested more than 8 tons, with a guaranteed purchase price of 1,200 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, the family had a profit of nearly 5 million VND. Mr. Dung said: Compared to growing corn for grain, growing BSK is more economically efficient, because the growing time is short, there are fewer pests and diseases, saving on care, the yield is superior and most importantly, the product is guaranteed to be consumed.

Farmers in Bao Vinh village, Phuoc Vinh commune (Ninh Phuoc) grow biomass corn in association

with businesses bringing high economic efficiency.

Mr. Ho Thanh Long, from Bao Vinh village, whose corn field is ready for harvest, excitedly said: My family has 3 sao of land growing corn for grain. This is the first crop I have grown BSK in a joint venture with many advantages such as the planting time only takes 80-85 days to harvest, so it saves on investment costs for care and labor in harvesting, especially there is no cost for separating seeds, drying and preserving like growing corn for grain. In particular, BSK is purchased by businesses with the whole plant, saving the effort of clearing the field. Therefore, in the following crops, I will continue to grow BSK.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Thuan, Director of the Provincial Agricultural Research Center, said: This is the first crop that the Provincial Agricultural Research Center has coordinated with the Maize Research Institute to implement the BSK planting model in Phuoc Vinh commune. The model has initially brought positive results, with a yield of 45-50 tons/ha. With the current market price, after deducting costs, farmers have an income from BSK of 25-30 million VND/ha, 1.5-2 times higher than corn for grain. Moreover, all BSK planting areas are covered by enterprises, creating motivation and confidence for farmers to feel secure in production and continue to expand the area. Up to now, the BSK planting model has been deployed by the Provincial Agricultural Research Center to expand to more than 200 hectares in localities of the three districts of Ninh Phuoc, Ninh Son and Bac Ai.

In the coming time, the provincial Center for Agricultural Research will continue to coordinate with facilities inside and outside the province to sign contracts to stably purchase products for farmers; strengthen links with cooperatives, cooperative groups as well as enterprises inside and outside the province to link with farmers, support with seeds, fertilizers, guide on production processes and purchase products for farmers. Currently, the provincial Center for Agricultural Research is promoting a program to sign contracts between Da Lat Milk Joint Stock Company and between cooperatives and farming households to aim at developing 700-1,000 hectares of BSK in the province... Thereby, improving productivity, product quality, and increasing income for farmers.
