Summer of the children in the boarding house

Summer is the time for children to rest and have fun after a year of school. For many children, this is an opportunity to travel with their families, attend gifted classes, or visit their grandparents in their hometown. For children in boarding houses, summer is often associated with the small yard in front of their rooms and playing with friends in the area.

Ms. Phan Thi Kim Cuong (from An Giang province) took the opportunity to tie her child's hair before going to work.

The boarding house is located in a small alley in Nhut Chanh commune, Ben Luc district, Long An province. In the morning, it is deserted because almost all the adults have gone to work. Only a few children are sitting on the porch of the boarding house . This is their summer "playground".

At 6am, Nguyen Thi Kim Xoàn (9 years old) - daughter of Ms. Phan Thi Kim Cuong (from An Giang province), woke up and sat in her room folding paper into an airplane. Ms. Cuong woke up at 4am to cook rice to bring to work and leave some for her daughter to eat at home. Around noon, her daughter just needed to take it out to eat and then go play with her friends in the same boarding house.

“My child is 9 years old this year, he knows how to take care of himself but I still feel uneasy. My husband and I work all the time so no one is home to look after him. Luckily, there are many women in the boarding house who often pay attention and remind my child when they play dangerous games,” Ms. Cuong shared.

Not only Kim Xoàn but many other children in the boarding house are in the same situation. In the summer , they do not go to boarding school and do not have the opportunity to attend gifted classes, so they often organize games in the boarding house. There are also days when they argue and get angry, but then they invite each other to continue playing because there is no one else but each other.

Children who stay alone in the boarding house often play with each other.

Most of the boarding houses are occupied by workers and laborers, so not everyone can afford to send their children back to their hometowns. Many parents have to ask nearby boarding houses to help look after their children, especially those with elderly people or children of the same age to play with.

Early in the morning, before going to work, Ms. Phan Thi Bich Phuong (from Ben Tre province) asked the owner of the grocery store at the beginning of the boarding house to look after her child until she returned home. "Having someone at home to keep an eye on my child makes me feel less worried. In the boarding house, I cleaned up, put away all dangerous objects such as knives, scissors, lighters and locked the gas tank," Ms. Phuong confided.

There are also families that have no choice but to let the older child look after the younger one, like the family of Mr. Do Ngoc Be (from Can Tho City). Mr. Be has 2 children, one in 9th grade, the other is only 3 years old. In the summer, he and his wife still have to work overtime, so the older child stays home to take care of the younger one. "Sister, stay home and remember to feed the younger one, turn on the fan, don't let the younger one go out in the sun, okay?" - Mr. Be told his child and hurried off to work. Even though the children are young, they soon learn to take care of themselves, give in to each other, and protect each other.

In order for children in boarding houses to have a safer and more meaningful summer, in addition to the efforts of each family, attention from local authorities and organizations is needed. Organizing playgrounds, classes or summer activities on site is a practical solution, contributing to giving children a meaningful vacation./.
