The cyberattack puts pressure on federal officials who have vowed to stop ransomware attacks that have plagued schools, hospitals and local governments across the United States.

CNN reported that multiple US government agencies have been affected in a global cyberattack. Eric Goldstein, assistant director of the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), said that CISA "is assisting multiple federal agencies whose systems have been compromised, affecting their MOVEit data transfer applications."

A CISA spokesperson did not respond to questions about who was suspected of carrying out the attack on U.S. federal agencies or how many were affected. But the incident represents a growing number of victims in a large-scale campaign that began two weeks ago and has targeted universities and several major state governments. The cyberattack has put pressure on federal officials who have vowed to stop ransomware attacks that have plagued schools, hospitals and local governments across the country.

Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore has announced that some “sensitive personal and financial information,” including medical billing records, may have been stolen in the attack. Meanwhile, the Georgia state university system confirmed that it is investigating the “scope and severity” of the attack.

Last week, a hacker group called CLOP admitted to carrying out a number of attacks affecting employees of the BBC, British Airways, oil company Shell, the US state governments of Minnesota and Illinois, and many other organizations.
