On December 30, the Faculty of Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City) organized a conference "Employers and Alumni" with the aim of improving and further enhancing the quality of training, contributing to the training of quality human resources for society.

Dr. Phan Manh Hung, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Literature, said that every two years, the Faculty of Literature will organize a conference to collect opinions from relevant parties, including students, lecturers and especially employers. In particular, employers are important because they will be the place to receive students for work after graduation. Having more comments and recommendations from employers will help the Faculty have appropriate training programs to meet the needs of society for human resources.

Previously, the Faculty of Literature had 3 training majors: Literature, Han Nom and Language. Since 2017, the Language major has been separated, recently adding the Film and Television Screenwriting major. In the near future, the Faculty of Literature will recruit an independent major, Art Studies, starting training from 2024.

The conference was attended by many employers and alumni of the Faculty of Literature.

In fact, students of the Faculty of Literature have been and are an important human resource for society. In addition to research and teaching, many students of the Faculty of Literature also work in press, media, and publishing agencies.

Attending the conference, in the role of a recruiter, Mr. Tran Dinh Ba, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House, said that at Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House, there are currently about 20 editors, almost none of whom come from the Publishing Faculty, but most of them graduated from different faculties.

According to him, editors are people who work a lot with words expressed through manuscripts. Therefore, they need to have basic factors, which are in-depth specialized knowledge in the field of manuscripts they are in charge of, which can be literature, history, culture, foreign languages... Along with that are professional skills in exploiting, editing manuscripts, communicating with authors, translators... working in groups, and being able to withstand the pressure of manuscript progress when needed.

Mr. Tran Dinh Ba (standing), Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House, shares about the requirements of the editing profession that students need to have.

Regarding the skills that students of the Faculty of Literature need to have if they want to work at publishing houses, Mr. Tran Dinh Ba said: “For new graduates, in addition to the specialized knowledge that publishing houses need, they need to have a progressive attitude and a desire to learn. Manuscript processing skills are accumulated gradually over time, mostly through self-study. In addition, they need to have soft skills in communication, teamwork...”.

MSc. Le Thi Gam, Head of the Department of Applied Sciences (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Van Lang University), raised the issue of how to exploit the strengths of Literature students. According to her, students of the Faculty of Literature already have a good foundation, basic knowledge, and specialized knowledge of literature. If there are additional directions to promote those strengths, when they graduate and go to work, they will easily compete with other workers.

“We should have subjects that exploit the strengths of literature students, the strongest of which is writing. There should be subjects like writing for public relations because the trend of writing for public relations is constantly changing, or subjects for communication on social networks,” said Ms. Le Thi Gam.

At the conference, many employers shared the opinion that currently, the communication skills (direct and indirect) of most new graduates are still limited. Therefore, equipping students in general and students of the Faculty of Literature in particular with communication skills is necessary. This helps them integrate more easily and conveniently into the workplace.
