After completing the registration procedure for additional admission to grade 10 at Trung Lap High School for his son, Mr. Duong Thanh Thuy (Tan An Hoi commune, Ho Chi Minh City) breathed a sigh of relief because his son was sure to get a "ticket" to study at a public high school.
Mr. Thuy took his child to Trung Lap High School (Thai My commune) to register for additional admission to grade 10.
Unlike other candidates, Mr. Thuy's son only registered for two high school entrance exams. When his son failed both of his high school entrance exams, his family began to panic and worry.
"It takes about 40 minutes from home to Trung Lap High School. At first, I will take my child to school, and later when he gets used to the road, I will let him take the bus by himself. This year, the school has added more than 200 positions, I submitted my application early so the possibility of my child being admitted to the school is very high. The teachers also encouraged me so I feel very secure" - Mr. Thuy said.
Sharing the reason why his son did not register for the 3 wishes, Mr. Thuy said that if he failed the public high school exam, he would study at a vocational college near his home. However, after finding out, the family decided to encourage him to complete the high school program first, then go to vocational school.
Submitting his application to Dien Hong High School, Nguyen Ba Quoc Dat said he was very sad and disappointed because his exam results were not as expected. In case he fails his additional application, Dat will ask his family to transfer him to a vocational school or a private high school near his home.
"Fortunately, my family encouraged me so I didn't feel much psychological pressure. With my exam score of 12.5 points, if I applied for additional admission to Suong Nguyet Anh High School and Ngo Gia Tu High School, the possibility of being admitted would be low, and the distance from home to school is too far" - Dat expressed.
This year, Dien Hong High School recruited 72 additional students, but after only 3 days, it received 76 additional applications.
Admitted but not confirmed
Trung Lap High School is the high school with the largest number of additional admissions in Ho Chi Minh City with 262 targets. Mr. Nguyen Van Hiep, Principal of Trung Lap High School, hopes that the school can achieve an additional admission rate of over 50%.
"On the system, there are about 585 students admitted to the school, but only 323 confirmed their admission. Most of the candidates who did not confirm their admission are concentrated in their second and third choices. The biggest obstacle for them is the geographical distance. Therefore, the additional admission quota this year is higher than in 2024," commented Mr. Hiep.
To overcome this problem, this year the school has prepared more boarding facilities and provided students with convenient transportation, most of whom will go to school by bus. In addition, the school has also adjusted the morning school start time to be later to create the best conditions for students.

According to Master Tran Thanh Hai, Principal of Vien Dong College, the number of applications for the 9+ college program (training program for junior high school graduates) this year exceeded the target with more than 800 applications. Although the actual number of students enrolled is lower than the number of previous registrations, the enrollment situation this year is quite positive.
Ms. Pham Thi Thuy Nhai, Deputy Director of Bay Hien Continuing Education Center (Bay Hien Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), said that the center has completed the enrollment target for grade 10 with about 525 students.
According to Ms. Nhai, since the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training officially announced the plan and additional enrollment targets for grade 10 in 2025 on July 28, the center has also received several more public high school failures.
"Students who fail public high school entrance exams are not necessarily due to low scores. There are still students who have to choose another learning environment closer to home because the geographical distance from home to the school they are admitted to is too far. Currently, the center has completed enrollment for the new school year, but can still consider accepting a few more cases who wish to study at the center," Ms. Nhai informed.
