The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said today, September 3, that the Pragyan rover of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which is tasked with exploring the Moon, has been put into sleep mode, NDTV reported.

Specifically, in a post on social network X (formerly Twitter), ISRO said the decision was made after the rover completed its mission and completed a two-week exploration of the south pole of the Moon. The ship is currently in Earth orbit to prepare for a 1.5 million km journey.

"Currently, the battery is fully charged. The solar panel is set to receive light at the next sunrise, expected on September 22. The receiver remains switched on," ISRO said.

The Indian space agency hopes that once it is reactivated, the Pragyan rover will continue to successfully complete a series of other missions. “If not, it will remain there as India’s lunar ambassador forever.”

ISRO said Pragyan traveled more than 100 meters, confirming the presence of sulfur, iron, oxygen and other elements on the Moon.

With the successful landing on the south pole of the Moon, India has become the fourth country to successfully conquer Earth's natural satellite, after the US, Russia (the successor country of the Soviet Union) and China, according to Reuters.

Chandrayaan-3's "historic" soft landing after a failed attempt in 2019 has become a source of pride for the South Asian nation, as the lunar south pole is difficult to reach. The media hailed the landing as India's greatest scientific feat.
