On July 9, Saudi Arabia announced the discovery of signs of a more complex society during the Neolithic period in the northwestern region of the country.

The discovery was the result of a study conducted by a team of archaeologists under the supervision of the Royal Commission for AlUla of the Saudi Arabian Government , which was established to preserve the heritage of AlUla, an oasis city in ancient Saudi Arabia.

In what is the first comprehensive description of human settlements in northwestern Saudi Arabia, the team found evidence that people in the region were more settled and developed than previously thought during the sixth and fifth millennia BC. They likely herded livestock, made jewelry, and engaged in trade to exchange goods with other neighboring regions such as Eastern Jordan and areas facing the Red Sea.

Archaeologist Jane McMahon added that the study validates theories about how the first people in northwestern Saudi Arabia lived. According to her, these people were not just simple shepherds but also the creators of architecture, houses, domesticated animals, and made various jewelry, ornaments and tools.

Several experts from King Saud University also participated in this research.
