Senegal's Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko said on September 4 that in the coming days, the country's new President will dissolve the opposition-dominated National Assembly and launch a large-scale anti-corruption campaign.

Mr Sonko was appointed head of Senegal 's government in April 2024 with the support of Mr Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who won a landslide victory in the presidential election in March with a promise to make radical changes while in power.
Prime Minister Sonko made the statement amid criticism of the government by former President Macky Sall's coalition.
President Faye and Prime Minister Sonko need the support of a majority of MPs in parliament to implement the policy changes they have promised. But the majority of seats in parliament are currently held by the opposition, which supports Mr Sall.
Under the constitution, the Senegalese president cannot dissolve parliament until it has been in office for at least two years, so it is likely that Mr Faye will begin acting on September 12, exactly 24 months after the first post-election session of parliament.
In addition, Mr. Sonko announced the implementation of a comprehensive anti-corruption campaign to strengthen the policy foundation of the new administration.
“We will not be lenient with corruption,” Senegal’s prime minister said, adding that Dakar would swiftly implement accountability measures and that former leaders would be targeted.
