The Sudanese government said on July 21 that the country's army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan had received the Iranian ambassador and sent an ambassador to Tehran to strengthen friendly relations between the two countries after eight years of rift.

Sudan and Iran agreed to restore diplomatic ties last October, as the Sudanese military-aligned government scrambled for allies amid a conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
According to a Sudanese government statement, General Burhan received Iranian Ambassador Hassan Shah Hosseini in Port Sudan - the Red Sea city that has become the de facto headquarters of the pro-military Sudanese government since the capital Khartoum was devastated by fighting with the RSF.

Sudan cut ties with Iran in 2016 in solidarity with Saudi Arabia, when Riyadh’s embassy in Tehran was attacked following the execution of a prominent Shi’ite cleric. Several of Saudi Arabia’s regional allies also cut ties with Iran at the time.
However, Riyadh and Tehran announced the restoration of relations in March 2023 following a China-brokered deal. Since then, Iran has moved to strengthen or restore ties with its Arab neighbors.
